Fox News on Facebook

For our Facebook assignment, I decided to follow Fox News for a week. the content that they posted was real content. It was kept up to date with what is going on in the world. I think I would check back often for news that isn’t always easy to find other places. I think the intended audience was people like myself who want to know what is going on in the world, but in a shortened form. The comments that they got back from their readers was immense. There were so many comments on each post that I could not even view them all on one page. On each of their posts, they asked readers to tell them what they thought. Some of the comments were about what people thought about the story in the post, but many others were the readers fighting about the political aspect of the story. I think this is a great way to communicate with readers and fans. They are able to get so much more feedback on what readers think and how they feel about what is going on in the country.

When looking at how they did according to the article 4 Ways Social Media is Changing Business, I think they did very well. They weren’t trying to sell anything, they followed up with the comments from their readers and they are available on all of the new social media sites. The only thing they didn’t follow as much was allowing their individual employees to show through. In the Four Ways Journalists Can Use Facebook article, I thought they used the fourth suggestion very well. They have the group set up on Facebook where others can see the top stories of the day.

Overall, I think that Fox News is using Facebook to their advantage as a way to inform the general public about what is going on in our country. It also gives readers a way to give their opinion and lets Fox News know how readers are reacting to what is going on in the country.

I think the websites that are linked in the blog are great resources for college students. I think that some of the blogs should be a little longer and go into more detail such as the Valentine’s Day Treat post. Maybe giving some more information about the treats or giving the links to the specific recipes that you think would be the best and/or the easiest.

I also did not see any events that you had gone to or any interviews you had done. I think for the blog Save the College Way, maybe you could have interviewed someone for some more ideas on how to save as a college student. I think with that entry, interviewing a few college students would be interesting to see how they are saving money and if what they are doing goes along with what the articles say. The Super Bowl Party Snack entry is another example where you could have interviewed someone about some other easy recipes for Super Bowl.

I also think that for your links in each blog, instead of having the whole link as the link, having just a few words that are hyperlinked would work better and would not be as confusing.

I think overall, you are doing good with your blog, but maybe doing a few things a bit differently would help make it better.

Following IN Soybean on Twitter

For the past week I have been following IN Soybean on Twitter. The majority of their tweets were professional. They posted information that farmers in Indiana would be interested in knowing. They also retweeted inforamtion from other sources about different things happening in Indiana agriculture. They have many posts that are either retweeted or are posted by them directly for Indiana Farmers Feed Us refering to the ways that Hoosiers can sign up to win FREE groceries for a year.

Many of their posts did interest me. The posts refered to topics that I myself am interested in and provided a way for me to easier understand some of the happenings in Indiana agriculture. The benefit I had from following them was finding out new information about things happening in Indiana agriculture that I was not aware of. I was also able to get new information right as it was being released instead of having to wait for it to come out in a magazine. I did not see much back and forth with their followers, but there was a lot of them retweeting information for some of the people who are following them.

As far as how IN Soybean did with the Four Ways Social Media is Changing Business article, I think they did very well. the first was going from “trying to sell” to “trying to make connections.” I think they did well with this because there were not any posts about them selling anything, it was them trying to connect with their followers and get them the information they need. The second was going from “Large Campaigns” to “Small Acts.” I think they did well with this too. They were giving information that their followers wanted and the information was not always about their company, but about many companines in the agriculture industry. The third was from “Controlling Our Image” to “Being Ourselves.” With this one, I did not find much about many of their employees having personal pages. I only found one. I think that they are still trying to maintain their overall company inage as opposed to having each individual employee posting for them on their own. The fourth was from “Hard to Reach” to “Available Everywhere.” I think they are doing good with this one as well. They are on Twitter and are using the RSS feeds as well.

Overall, I think IN Soybean is doing a great job with the way that they use Twitter to connect with their followers. They keep them updated not only with what they are doing, but also with what other agriculture companies are doing.

In my opinion, it was very difficult to cover a story using Twitter. At the school board meeting, it was difficult to keep up because they would motion and vote and move on to the next item within a matter of seconds. That made it hard to keep track of what they were talking about because by the time that I had typed a text to send about what they had just voted on, they were voting on the next item and I had missed any discussion they had about it. I thought it could be beneficial to someone who would want to know exactly what was happening at the school board meeting that could not attend.

Social media outlets are becoming a very popular way for people to get their news. When posed with the question of whether I would prefer to get my news via newspaper, online, or from Twitter, it is a tough decision. For most news stories, I would prefer to read news stories in the paper or the online version of the newspaper. However, getting news online can be convenient when it is a breaking news story and I can then get updates from the site instead of waiting for the paper to come out the next day. Twitter could be useful if it was something that was happening in real time that was very important that I wanted to follow, such as the earthquake in Haiti.
